Nalu’s Tropical Takeout is St. Augustine’s oldest food truck with 15 years under its belt.
Located at the intersection of the Surf Station and entrance to Anastasia State Park on State Road A1A, it’s hard to miss the shiny red trailer flying the Hawaiian flag.
After owner Jerry Morgan returned from the surf-loving, food-truck culture of Kauai, he decided to open his own food truck in 2002. When he married Bobbie, she became his business partner, and they have been working side-by-side ever since.
Nalu — meaning waves in Hawaiian — offers a healthy selection of wraps, tacos and burritos. Its cilantro pesto sets them apart from other similar shops.
Surfers, couples and families alike stop by for tropical takeout a’ la Hawaiian style.
Q&A WITH OWNERS JERRY AND BOBBIE MORGAN
How would you describe the restaurant’s atmosphere?
Beachy and relaxed. Fun island style. It’s entirely an outdoor experience. There are a few tables to eat your takeout at. We are busy with people coming for takeout and that makes for a lively scene. Bobbie has hung her painted Hawaiian landscapes. Her folk art adds a lushness not unlike Kauai to the area we operate in.
What is your food philosophy?
To prepare the freshest ingredients properly, quickly and consistently. We want our customers served with a positive attitude and we really want our customers to be satisfied with their meal and happy by the way they are treated by our staff.
What types of cuisine do you specialize in?
Healthy wraps, tacos and burritos. You can have any one of them with: mahi, wahoo, yellow-fin tuna (ahi) or shrimp. All seafood is caught in the wild. Or you might prefer chicken, beans, steak or ground beef . We have a Hawaiian salad called Shoyu ahi Poke. The salad consists of ahi, mixed with Hawaiian sea salt [and] onions served over sticky rice and chopped cabbage.
What is your signature dish?
It is a hard choice to pick just one. I’d have to say the mermaid wrap. She comes with Cajun seared ahi, sliced rare, served in a toasted spinach wrap with pesto cilantro, sticky rice and chopped cabbage. The Cajun seared ahi with our signature cilantro pesto makes it one of our bestsellers.
What do you recommend for a first timer?
It all depends on what you want as your core food. Do you fancy mahi or ahi? Maybe you want a vegetarian burrito or taco. Our staff can help you narrow down your choices based on what you are looking for.
