Several of the elite athletes participating in the Florida Skimboarding Pro/Am compete in the Crossover Tour organized by Steve Pullara each year.

This event, which preceded the Vilano Beach tournament, started in Tampa with a skateboarding competition hosted by the Skate Park of Tampa last Wednesday. It then moved to Orlando’s Typhoon Lagoon for a surfing contest last Thursday. It wraps up with the skimboarding tournament at Vilano Beach.

The Crossover Tour, an event that was created in 2001, awards a cash prize.

A skimboard is about half the weight and thickness of a surfboard and slightly wider, but it doesn’t have fins. The boards are made of fiberglass or carbon fiber, and the core is high-density foam. Skimboarders start off riding the board like a skateboard on the sand. Once into the surf, they hit waves and use it like a surfboard.
