The Uncaged Cork is a wine and tapas restaurant with a bar, a dining area and a lounge. You can play backgammon in the lounge and dance to live music Thursday through Saturday nights.
The menu is a melange with gourmet cheeses, tapas of pan-seared scallops and a saucy, maple-cayenne salmon entree. Handhelds include the drunken goat burger and a vegetarian burger made with a blend of black beans, vegetables and quinoa. On the lighter side, you can order one of the farm-fresh salads and add chicken or shrimp to the mix.
California wines are featured and co-owner Amy Welch has plans to introduce international selections. And what goes better with wine than a cheeseboard?
The Uncaged Cork is an intimate restaurant with 35 seats, and is fairly young at nine months old. Families are welcome. However, the restaurant has a sophisticated menu and live music that favors adults.
Q&A WITH CO-OWNER AMY WELCH
How would you describe the restaurant’s atmosphere?
Relaxing with a romantic ambiance. Between the tea lights, the warm and dimmed lighting it’s a great place for a date night. Then you can move into the lounge to listen to music. We have quite a bit of dancing, too. A beautiful bar sits at the front of the restaurant.
What is your food philosophy?
I want to be known for five things. Foods and wines that you can’t find anywhere else. I am building on our gourmet cheese selection as well as our wine list. The kitchen is scratch and we make every dish to order. We want you to come here and experience a meal you are not going to have at home.
What types of cuisine do you specialize in?
Gourmet cheeses and unique sauces on our entrees served with meticulous presentation. We have a Stilton cheese board, a brie board and an around-the-globe board with Prima Donna Gouda from Holland and others featuring porter from Ireland and manchego from Spain.
What is your signature dish?
The riesling chicken entree. The chicken is served on a roasted Brussels sprout quinoa blend and drizzled with a riesling cream sauce. This is one of our gluten-free dishes. All of our entrees are gluten free. If your taste buds need further tempting, your sever will ask the chef to accommodate your request.
What would you recommend for a first timer?
I’d first ask how hungry are you? If your in the mood to try our gourmet cheese, I’d say one of the cheese boards, like the brie, and we are happy to suggest wine pairings. It’s an amazing experience, good wine and good cheese. For an entree, try the riesling chicken or the Uncaged steak with a pinot wine reduction sauce.
