Sports marketing specialist to speak at Christian professional’s luncheon

Michael Garnes will be the guest speaker at the next Marketplace Christian Professionals Resource Luncheon.

Registration and networking will begin at 11:30 a.m. July 13 at Watson Realty, 3505 U. S. 1 South. The buffet-style luncheon will start at noon.

Garnes is the President of Next Level Executive Search (NLES). NLES is a division of Next Level Sports, one of three sports companies he founded.

Garnes currently leads NLES’ Global Sports Practice, which provides recruitment of mid- to senior-level sales, marketing and sponsorship leaders in the sports industry. The practice focus is to identify, evaluate, attract and place top talent with major sports organizations and venues, companies, corporate sponsors, professional leagues and teams, and businesses serving the sports industry.

Garnes’ broad professional background includes experience in collegiate and professional sports, Fortune 500 companies, public and private companies, nonprofit organizations, and senior-level leadership positions in the military.

As a major in the U.S. Air Force Intelligence Squadron, Garnes was recognized for being extremely effective in recruiting within critical placement deadlines. He also successfully recruited, recommended and placed numerous non-commissioned officers resulting in their acceptance into the U.S. Air Force Academy and Officer Training School.

At Holland &Knight, a nationally ranked law firm, he helped start the collegiate sports administration and compliance practice. As a consultant, Garnes was the only non-lawyer member selected to the board, which developed the athlete-agent law and licensure examination for the State of Florida. He also provided consultation to a CBS TV “60 Minutes” segment of Lloyd Daniels, one of the most sought-after basketball recruits in the nation.

As a former NCAA enforcement representative, paralegal and licensed private investigator, Garnes has conducted in-house investigations, background and reference checks, and resolved compliance matters for universities, colleges and conferences. He has a master’s degree in sports administration from the University of New Mexico, and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Garnes was a guest speaker at the PGA Tour Diversity Internship Program and has been tapped for his sports industry and executive search expertise by sports businesses, associations, organizations, higher education, law schools and media.

He is a frequent guest speaker and consultant regarding recruitment and placement, career transition, retention and diversity issues in the industry.

In his community, Garnes serves as an advisor and mentor to youth groups and young athletes in the areas of character development, leadership and career guidance. He is passionate about and committed to promoting higher education, with a special emphasis on at risk and minority groups.

Garnes is married to the former Marie Ferris of North Prairie, Wisconsin. The couple have been married 29 years. Marie graduated from Marquette University with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering. She also has a master’s degree University of New Mexico, Anderson School of Management.

She retired in August 2017, after 33 years with Johnson &Johnson and Medtronic.
