Tips from citizens and help from the Baker County Sheriff’s Office led to an arrest of a 28-year-old Ponte Vedra Beach man in Monday’s report of a sexual assault by an intruder at a Jacksonville home, according to police.

Travis Christopher Jakubowski of Pablo Road was charged Wednesday night with armed sexual battery, home invasion robbery and false imprisonment, jail records show. Officers were called to a home in the 10900 block of Beach Boulevard about 11 a.m. Monday after the woman said someone had forced his way in and sexually battered her, the Sheriff’s Office said. The woman gave a detailed description of the man, and police released a composite sketch of a man with a bald head and no facial hair in his early to mid-30s with possible tattoos on his arms.

Some Baker County residents had gotten into a flap at a Sanderson gas station April 14 with a stranger who was driving a pickup, though they did not get the man’s name or the tag on his truck, authorities said. The man showed off a machete and sledge hammer while staring at a woman and indicated he had a gun, according to an incident report. After seeing televised reports of Monday’s attack, they recognized the man from the police sketch and the image of his truck and called police.

“The detectives from Jacksonville worked with Baker County and obtained video surveillance that showed the suspect and his vehicle,” said Lt. Sharon Scott, head of the Sheriff’s Office’s special assault unit. “Armed with that information, detectives were able to locate the same vehicle on the video from a camera near the scene of the home invasion.”

That vehicle was a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck with a tool box, which Jacksonville witnesses reported seeing in the area of the sexual assault, Scott said. The man driving it also matched the description the woman gave. The image of the silver truck was released and police received more tips. That led to identifying Jakubowksi. He was tracked to the home of a family member on LeBaron Avenue in Jacksonville’s Southside, according to his arrest report.

Sheriff Scott Rhoden in Baker County said his office received some tips on the suspect, but he remains under investigation.

Jakubowski has a minor arrest record in Duval County, including a Jan. 18 marijuana charge, according to jail records.
