Hit-and-run driver killed during police pursuit in Nassau County

FERNANDINA — A local man was killed early Saturday morning after losing control of his vehicle while being pursued by the police.

Gary Denmark, 40, was traveling eastbound on Wilder Blvd. in Fernandina Beach at approximately 12:00 a.m. Saturday, leaving the scene of a previous hit-and-run incident, according to authorities.

An officer from the Fernandina Beach Police Department was in pursuit of Denmark, when they witnessed him lose control of his vehicle twice.

According to the incident report, Denmark’s Chevrolet Silverado veered into the oncoming lane and shoulder, before losing control for a second time and running off the road onto the right shoulder, where the vehicle struck a culvert.

The truck overturned after striking the culvert, coming to a final rest on the roof. Denmark was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to authorities.

A passenger inside the vehicle was transported to UF Health Jacksonville with only minor injuries. Neither the driver, nor the passenger were wearing seatbelts, according to the report.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol played a part in this traffic crash. The surviving passenger could face charges, pending an investigation.
