Sheriff’s Office aids federal agents in apprehension of Wisconsin man Wednesday

Deputies with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office helped agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives apprehend a Wisconsin man in Vilano Beach on Wednesday.

Antonio R. Contreras, 29, was booked into the St. Johns County jail on a violation of probation charge out of Wisconsin on Wednesday evening.

In a subsequent news release, the Sheriff’s Office said special agents with the ATF contacted local authorities about Contreras, the violation charge and the “furtherance of a criminal investigation.”

Deputies and agents later began their search for Contreras in the south Ponte Vedra Beach and Vilano Beach area where deputies eventually found a vehicle matching the description of Contreras’ vehicle parked near The Reef restaurant.

Deputies, with the help of Sheriff’s Office K-9s, then tracked Contreras north along the beach where he was arrested without further incident.

Questions about the nature of Contreras’ original charges or the current investigation were referred, by the Sheriff’s Office, to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Investigations.

A representative there could not be reached on Wednesday evening.
