Underage sex sting arrests 17 men

CHRISTINA.KELSO@STAUGUSTINE.COM Sheriff David Shoar discusses the arrest of 17 men in a recent interagency child sex sting operation, dubbed “Cruel Summer,” in an afternoon press conference at the St. Johns County Sherriff’s Office on Friday, August 11, 2017.

Detectives with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office arrested 17 men recently in sex sting operation designed to protect children, Sheriff David Shoar said.

“This is the fourth such operation that we participated in here in this county,” Shoar said at an afternoon news conference about the operation dubbed “Cruel Summer.”

The 17 arrested in the multiagency operation brings the total to 63 since 2011, a Sheriff’s Office representative said.

The operation, like the others, involved detectives posting to what Shoar called “e-commerce” websites and posing as an underage person and striking up online conversations.

“Invariably some of these people are looking to travel to our county thinking they are going to have some kind of a sexual relationship with an underage female or an underage male,” Shoar said.

Those who do are typically arrested by sheriff’s deputies when they show up at a location arranged during the course of the conversations.

Those arrested in the most recent operation came from Duval, Clay and St. Johns counties, and from as far away as South Carolina and Virginia. Their ages ranged from 19 to 60.

Shoar said he finds it surprising and troubling that these sting operations, as publicized as they are, still produce arrests.

“These people know that they could be talking to law enforcement, yet they still do it,” he said. “I mean what a compulsion that must be.”

As the conference wound down, Shoar also issued a warning to parents, saying that they need to be paying attention to what their children are doing online.

“You’ve got to watch those computers,” he said. “There are horror stories out there.”
