A St. Augustine man was killed in a car crash Thursday afternoon as he was attempting to turn onto State Road 16.
Kevin Holton, 67, was making a left-hand turn from Sutton Road just after 4 p.m. when his Pontiac Solstice was struck by a westbound Saturn Vue driven by a 29-year-old Palatka woman, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
The trooper who wrote the report speculated that Holton likely didn’t see the Vue approaching and said that the woman veered left and applied her brakes but was unable to avoid the collision.
Holton was transported to Memorial Hospital of Jacksonville, but died of his injuries.
Both drivers were wearing safety belts and alcohol is not not believed to have been a factor, the report said.
Late night crash
About six hours later, a Satsuma man died after his truck left the roadway and crashed into a several trees near the intersection of County 13A and County Road 13.
Alexander Chase McGuire, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash despite the efforts of several good Samaritans who tried to save him, a Highway Patrol report said.
The preliminary investigation at the scene found that McGuire had been travelling in his Chevrolet pickup truck on C.R. 13A when, just before 10:30 p.m., he failed to stop at a stop sign at the C.R. 13 intersection. The truck traveled through the intersection and hit a stand of trees on the west shoulder, according to the report.
McGuire was not wearing a seatbelt. Toxicology tests are pending.
