Cold finish denies Dolphins against Florida Gulf Coast

An ice-cold stretch run stopped Jacksonville University from knocking off the Atlantic Sun Conference leader, as the Dolphins lost 68-62 to Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers Saturday.

Former Providence School standout Christian Terrell scored FGCU’s go-ahead basket with 1:44 to play, while the Dolphins went scoreless for the last three minutes.

That denied JU a chance to claim first place at the halfway mark of the ASUN schedule.

Earlier, JU had used a 13-0 run, with 11 of those points from J.D. Notae, to seize a 62-60 lead with 3:19 remaining against the first-place Eagles (16-8, 7-0).

FGCU’s Brandon Goodwin, returning to the lineup after missing Wednesday’s game at North Florida, helped put the game away with free throws to finish with 16 points.

Jace Hogan led the Dolphins with 23 points and Notae scored 15.

The Eagles won the rebounding battle 46-31, led by 10 from former Arlington Country Day forward Michael Gilmore.

JU (11-13, 5-2) next travels to DeLand to face Stetson Monday.
