Pearce fires Icemen to victory over Swamp Rabbits

Turning point: In his first game back with the Icemen, leading scorer Elgin Pearce struck the go-ahead goal in the third period to lift Jacksonville past the Greenville Swamp Rabbits 3-1 at Veterans Memorial Arena Saturday.

Three stars: 1. Pearce, Jacksonville (one goal); 2. Cam Critchlow, Jacksonville (two assists); 3. Austin Lotz, Jacksonville (19 saves).

Penalty box: The Icemen took advantage of a high-sticking double minor on Greenville’s Joe Basaraba for Pearce’s power play game-winner.

Around the rink: In addition to Pearce, Jimmy Lodge also returned to the Icemen from the American Hockey League’s Manitoba Moose. … For the third straight game, Jacksonville captain Garet Hunt scored the opening goal. … Bobby MacIntyre also scored for the Icemen. … Goaltender Lotz has allowed only two goals in his last 187 minutes. … The Icemen have now won five of their last six, closing within seven points of the final South Division playoff spot.
