Flagler blanks Limestone to advance in NCAA DII women’s soccer tourney

COLUMBUS, Ga. | Charlene Nowotny scored a pair of goals to lift No. 19 Flagler College to a 3-0 win over Limestone College in the first round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional on Friday afternoon at the Walden Soccer Complex.

Flagler (16-2-2) Flagler will face No. 10 Columbus State in a second-round match Sunday at 1 p.m. This will be the third meeting between these two teams. Limestone, the Conference Carolinas champ, ended its season at 17-3-1.

After a scoreless first half, Nowotny scored the first of her two goals in the 68th minute. Fio Fustagno sent a cross pass into the box and Nowotny tapped home the goal to give the Flagler Saints the early lead. Nearly eight minutes later, Nowotny knocked in a ball that Limestone keeper Veronica Smeltzer had punched away.

Flagler added a late tally when Addie Foster put in a pass from Abby Austin with 1:30 left.

Sarah-Lisa Dubel turned in her eighth clean sheet of the season with five saves. She tied Flagler’s Division II-era record for most shutouts in a season with Hope McArthur, who had eight in 2007. Smeltzer had nine saves for the Limestone Saints.

Both teams took 17 shots and Limestone held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. Limestone was whistled for 12 of the 16 fouls in the match. Limestone played the final 15:24 one-man down after Emma Hickson picked up her second yellow card.

The victory was Flagler’s first in an NCAA Division II tournament match since becoming eligible in 2009.
