Oxendine leads Menendez to 48-35 win over Yulee; St. Joseph falls in OT

Darian Oxendine ran for three touchdowns and tossed a TD pass to Cameron McInnis as Menendez rolled to a 48-35 victory over Yulee on Friday night.

Eugene Foster and Kenny Logan also had rushing touchdowns and Ryan Rice scored on a fumble return for the Falcons (2-1), who rebounded from last week’s 65-14 loss to St. Augustine.

Menendez led 28-7 at halftime, but Yulee (0-2) scored on the opening drive of the second half. Yulee also intercepted Michael King, returning the pick for a touchdown, but never got closer than 14 points in the second half.

The Falcons forced four turnovers.

“There were a lot of distractions this week with the hurricane and everything that we overcame,” Menendez coach Patrick Turner said. “There was a lot of traffic gridlock (getting to Yulee). It was a long day and a long week. It’s exciting the kids were able to overcome that and come out with a win.”

St. Joseph’s Sam Ryan kicked a 32-yard field goal with one second to go to force overtime, but the Flashes could not do it again in the extra period.

Eagle’s View (1-2) blocked St. Joseph’s field goal attempt in the Flashes’ opening possession of OT. The home team then scored on a 10-yard run on first down to hand St. Joseph its second loss in two games. The Flashes jumped out to a 9-0 lead on James Drysdale’s 60-yard touchdown reception from Dylan Thibault and a safety. Eagles’ View scored just before halftime to make it 9-6 and then went up 12-9 in the third quarter.

“Your goal as a coach is for the team to be better than it was a week ago, and we were,” said first-year St. Joseph coach Brannon Tidwell. “We’re a young team. We have four guys who played significant minutes here last year. We have to figure out how to win games like this, and eventually we will.”
