The Florida Spartans, an independent deaf men’s basketball team, is hosting a Southeast Athletic Association of the Deaf (SEAAD) invitational tournament today at Ketterlinus Gym. The 10-team double-elimination tournament is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
The Spartans, who include several former Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind students, are hosting the tournament to raise funds to travel to the SEAAD regional tournament in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, March 8-10.
Spartans head coach Jesse Crawford said the idea of the tournament is “to help everyone connect with the deaf community and showcase their basketball talents and to help this team to achieve (its) goal to win the regional championship to be able to attend the National Deaf Basketball Organization’s national tournament (June 14-16 in Coral Springs).”
