Local Roundup: Ponte Vedra's Jack Johnson blocks school-record 11 shots

Jack Johnson set a school record with 11 blocks Thursday, but none were bigger than his block of a Bolles layup with one second left to preserve Ponte Vedra’s road win over the Bulldogs (14-4). Reese Russi led the Sharks (8-8) with 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Johnson added 11 boards. The Sharks host Bartram Trail at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Nease overcame a 31-27 halftime deficit to defeat Melbourne at home Thursday in a battle of two of the top teams in the state. Nease, the top-ranked team in Class 7A, improved to 17-3 with the win, while Melbourne, ranked 10th in Class 8A fell to 15-2. Peyton Carter led the Panthers with 20 points, while Karissa Niles scored 18 points, Kiya Turner recorded 15 points and six assists and Camille Hobby added 15 points and nine rebounds. Mykah Eshbaugh contributed nine rebounds and six assists. Nease outscored Melbourne 47-29 in the second half.

Ponte Vedra improved to 14-3, 7-0 in District 5-6A with a home victory over Menendez (12-4, 6-2). Tess Tibbits (15 points), Channing Chappell (13) and Jacke Wager (13) combined to score 41 points for the Sharks. Anteria Evans led the Falcons with 15 points, while Darrnisha Varnes scored 12 points and Darralela Tobler and Aryelle Wagner scored 10 points apiece. Ponte Vedra hosts Matanzas today while Menendez travels to Nease on Tuesday.

CREEKSIDE 1

The No. 1 team in the nation conceded a goal early, but scored three unanswered to improve to 19-0. Creekside’s Cami Simmons scored the Knights’ goal midway through the first half. St. Johns responded with goals from Peyton Crews, Kirsten Pavlisko and Abbey Newton. The final goal came in the 67th minute, moments after Creekside’s Avery McNelis was denied by Spartans goalkeeper Maddie Wilkes. Creekside ends the regular season 10-4-4. St. Johns Country Day won its 63rd straight game and is unbeaten in its last 75. The Spartans’ last loss was at the hands of the Knights — on Jan. 6, 2015.

Bartram Trail closed the regular season with a shutout of Ponte Verdra. Maddie DeFranco scored her team-leading 15th goal of the season. Winger Tori Grambo scored Bartram’s second. The Bears enter next week’s District 4-4A tournament at 11-3-4. Ponte Vedra enters the District 4-3A tournament 10-7-2.
