Menendez and Matanzas were co-champions at the Region 4-1A girls weightlifting meet Wednesday at the Falcons’ gym. Fifteen Menendez lifters placed in their weight classes with Dee Dee Small, Remy Prevatt and Mya Altiery winning regional titles.
Small won the 119-pound regional championship for the third consecutive year. Altiery won the 139-pound title for the second consecutive year. Prevatt won her first regional title at 129 pounds.
They automatically qualify for the Class 1A state championship Feb. 2 at Panama City Beach Arnold High School. The other lifters who placed in the top six in their weight classes enter a pool from which the lifters with the top 12 weight totals of all eight regions advance to state.
The other Menendez lifters to place include: Melanie Miller, 110 pounds, second place; Kiera Semmelman, 110 pounds, fifth place; Emonei Wynn, 119 pounds, fourth place; Noel Plappert, 129 pounds, fourth place; Lauren Prosuch, 154 pounds, second place; Daniela Murillo, 154 pounds, fifth place; Mary Rubright, 169 pounds, third place; Sydney Staley, 169 pounds, fifth place; Eden Edgell, 183 pounds, fifth place; Cierra Edgell, 199 pounds, sixth place; Allison Melgard, 199 pounds, third place; Cherish Hildreth, unlimited, fourth place.
The Region 3-2A meet is scheduled for Saturday at Port Orange Spruce Creek. Thirty-one St. Johns County lifters qualified for the meet, including 11 from Bartram Trail, nine from Creekside, eight from St. Augustine and four from Nease.
