A cappella group the Houghton Singers set to perform at the St. Augustine Art Association

The Houghton Singers, Houghton College’s a cappella vocal ensemble, is coming to St. Augustine. The Singers will present a free, public concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Augustine Art Association, 22 Marine St.

The Houghton Singers’ 2016-2017 tour brings a diverse repertoire of pop, contemporary and sacred music to the stage. Originally inspired by Pentatonix, Houghton Singers — one of the main vocal ensembles at the college’s Greatbatch School of Music — has grown in size and prestige. The group is now composed of 15 students representing both music and non-music majors.

Director Kelly Van Kirk is enthusiastic about expanding the group’s presence to include this year’s stops in Roanoke, Virginia; Charlotte, North Carolina; St. Augustine; Plant City and Fort Myers.

“Music unites us, transcending social and cultural barriers,” Van Kirk says. “Our goal as an ensemble is to bring the healing power of music to as many people as possible, and do that at the highest quality that we can.”
