Authorities continue search for missing swimmer, a 20-year-old Jacksonville man

Authorities are still searching the ocean for Skyler Christian Taylor, a 20-year-old Jacksonville man who went missing near the St. Augustine Inlet on Sunday night.

“The search to locate the missing swimmer from late yesterday afternoon resumed this morning at 5:30 a.m. and are operating with diminished returns given the eyewitness accounts of the event and ocean conditions,” according to St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Cmdr. Chuck Mulligan. “Currently [eight] government vessels and a helicopter are involved in the effort, which is currently deemed a recovery mission.”

The search began about 5:50 p.m. after authorities received a report of two swimmers in distress near the north inlet jetty on Porpoise Point. When they arrived, rescue personnel were told one swimmer had made it back to shore. The second swimmer was last seen about 150 yards offshore near the North Shoal, according to St. Johns Fire Rescue officials.

Searchers including the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit were using boats and helicopters in an effort to locate the swimmer.
