A St. Johns County Sheriff’s deputy arrested a Jacksonville man Monday night after he was found sleeping behind the wheel of his truck on Interstate 95.
Selvin Menendez Rodriguez, 22, was taken into custody on charges of DUI, operating a motor vehicle without a valid license and resisting an officer without violence, an incident report says.
The deputy who filled out the report said that he was originally called to the area of mile marker 308 in the northbound lanes of I-95 shortly after 8 p.m. for a report of a reckless driver who had pulled over to the side of the road.
Once in the area, the deputy located a white Toyota truck with a driver “slumped over and holding an open container of alcohol in his left hand,” the report says. The truck was running.
The deputy said he knocked on the window but the occupant, later identified as Menendez Rodriguez, did not respond.
Eventually the deputy entered the passenger side of the truck and took the key out of the ignition and noted that the driver smelled of alcohol and “was in possession of multiple open containers of alcohol.”
During one attempt to wake the man, the deputy said he “became startled and flung his arms” spilling a beer in the center console.
When St. Johns County Fire Rescue arrived to check on his welfare, Menendez Rodriguez “became agitated and refused to leave the vehicle.”
After a brief struggle, two deputies were eventually able to pull the driver from the truck and secure him.
Subsequent breath samples returned readings of .192 and .185.
