TU Boys Basketball Power Poll: First Coast, Palatka move up

The boys high school basketball Power Poll will run Thursday’s through the end of the regular season. Records are through Wednesday, Jan. 10 games.

1. Creekside (13-2, Class 8A), 1

Notable wins: Landrum, SC, Oakleaf, Plant, Ponte Vedra, Vanguard

Glance: A 2-0 week for the Knights, who beat a high-quality 10-2 Tampa Plant (56-46) and St. Augustine (58-35) since our last Power Poll. J’michael Plummer scored his 1,000th-career point in the win over Plant.

2. First Coast (11-2, Class 8A), 4

Notable wins: Bishop Snyder, Fleming Island, Fletcher, Impact Christian, NFEI, Paxon, Raines

Glance: The Buccaneers ran their winning streak to eight games with wins over NFEI (62-48) and Atlantic Coast (47-30). That win over NFEI looks quite impressive considering NFEI knocked off previous No. 2 Providence. Naseem Khaalid (19.6 ppg, 8 rpg) and Jalen Shuman (14.4 ppg) power First Coast.

3. Providence (10-4, Class 4A), 2

Notable wins: Bishop Snyder, Bolles, Fletcher, Ponte Vedra

Glance: A 2-1 week for the Stallions, who took a loss to NFEI (45-43), and then bounced back to beat Carver, Ala. (41-35) and Gainesville St. Francis (74-59). Good games on the horizon against Impact Christian (Jan. 12) and First Coast (Jan. 13).

4. Palatka (14-0, Class 6A), 5

Notable wins: Matanzas, Monsignor Pace, North Florida Educational, Ponte Vedra, Satellite

Glance: Only one game since last Power Poll, an easy 71-23 win over Menendez. The Panthers are the only unbeaten team in the area.

5. Bishop Kenny (12-3, Class 6A), 3

Notable wins: Clearwater, Episcopal, Impact Christian Liberty, Ponte Vedra, Ribault, Yulee

Glance: A couple victories since last week, a two-point win over Episcopal and a one-point W over Impact Christian. The Crusaders are 4-2 this season in games decided by a possession.

Next three: Raines (10-4, Class 5A); Bolles (12-3, Class 5A); Paxon (9-4, Class 6A).

On the bubble: Bartram Trail (8-4, Class 8A); Bishop Snyder (7-7, Class 4A); Bradford (9-6, Class 5A); Englewood (10-2, Class 7A); Episcopal (8-4, Class 5A); Fleming Island (11-7, Class 8A); Fletcher (7-5, Class 8A); Impact Christian (6-8, Class 2A); Jackson (7-6, Class 5A); North Florida Educational (8-5, Class 2A); Oakleaf (9-3, Class 8A); Orange Park (9-5, Class 6A); Ponte Vedra (5-7, Class 6A); Potter’s House (2-7, Independent); Ribault (6-8, Class 6A).
