Local Roundup: Nease girls basketball clinches top seed

Camille Hobby and Kiya Turner combined for 33 points on the road Friday night as Nease finished its District 3-7A schedule with a perfect 8-0 record to claim the No. 1 seed in next month’s district tournament. Hobby had 18 points and seven rebounds, while Turner recorded 15 points, nine steals, four rebounds and three assists. Peyton Carter added 10 points and six rebounds, while Hannah Campbell came off the bench to score eight points and grab seven rebounds. Mallory Roney scored a game-high 21 points for Middleburg (13-5, 5-2). The Panthers (13-5) will host Melbourne on Thursday night at 7:30.

Four players scored in double figures for host Ponte Vedra (12-3). Channing Chappel scored 12 points for the Sharks, while Tess Tibbits, Hayden Oates and Jackie Wagner scored 11 points each. Bella Weary led Bartram Trail (10-7) with 12 points. The Sharks host Palatka on Tuesday, while Bartram will travel to Oakleaf Wednesday night.

WRESTLING

In the inaugural FHSAA State Series Duals, Creekside has advanced to the Class 2A state quarterfinals. The Knights defeated Orange Park 59-15 in the first round and eliminated Matanzas 36-35 in the Regional East finals. They will meet Tallahassee Lincoln at Kissimmee Osceola on Jan. 19 for a spot in the Final Four.

The Falcons scored within the first three minutes and didn’t slow down the rest of the evening in their final District 4-3A match of the season. Anhnalie Layman scored the opener. Morgan Schooley scored in the 11th minute and Shelby Brim, who assisted Layman’s opener, made it 3-0 in the 12th. Brim finished with a hat trick, while Layman scored twice. Allie McMandon also scored for the Falcons, who are 9-5 overall and 5-1 in district.

The Sharks fell to 9-4-1 after losing on the road on Friday night. James Rossi and Gabriel Moraes scored Ponte Vedra’s goals.

Logan Conway hit three of Ponte Vedra’s eight 3-pointers en route to a game-high 19 points to lead the Sharks (6-7, 2-2) to a District 5-6A victory at home. Drevon Guillory scored 11 points for Menendez (4-9, 0-5), while Kenny Logan added 10 points.

Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind rebounded from a 57-37 loss to Gainesville Oak Hall on Tuesday. The Dragons rallied from a 23-19 halftime deficit against First Coast. FSDB (7-6) will play in the Mason Dixon tournament next week at Alabama School for the Deaf. The Dragons, who are seeded third in the tourney will play their opener on Thursday.
